The Big Blue men’s tennis team has been ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) top 75 for the first time, according to an April 2 announcement. The team, which is off to a strong 12-3 start this spring, is currently ranked number 70 in NCAA Division III men’s tennis.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for the program, as it is their first appearance in the national rankings. The ranking comes during their inaugural season under new head coach Connor Barnard.
The ITA expanded its computerized national team rankings to include a top 75 format beginning with the 2021-22 season. The ranking algorithm considers win and loss points, strength of schedule, and the significance of each match result. As teams continue through their seasons, these values are updated to reflect ongoing performance.
Several newcomers have contributed to the team’s early success. Freshman Gillian Nahum holds a singles record of 12-3 and pairs with Jorge Aura for an 11-3 doubles mark at No.1 doubles. Aura also has an individual singles record of 11-3 while playing at positions four through six. Junior Matthew Kordesh and freshman Harry Masterman have posted a strong doubles record of nine wins and two losses across various positions in the lineup. Freshman Eduardo Vargas has begun his career with a singles record of nine wins and three losses while playing at No.3 or No.4.
In conference play within the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, Millikin has started out with one win and one loss after facing North Central early on its schedule. Their next matchup will be against Carthage College’s Firebirds on Friday, April 10.
