Regan Deering, a candidate for the 88th House District, has publicly declared her support for fellow plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed by Tom DeVore, which challenges the state’s ban on assault weapons. She expressed her pride in standing with individuals from across the state who had gathered in a courtroom to support this cause.

“Proud to be in a packed courtroom of fellow plaintiffs from across the state in the DeVore lawsuit today against the assault weapons ban,” Deering said on Facebook. “We now await the judge’s written ruling on the motion to reconsider.”

“People are rising up to push back on government overreach! As your State Representative I promise to work hard to prevent the legislature from taking away our freedoms.”

Earlier this fall, DeVore sought reconsideration of his lawsuit against a comprehensive gun ban passed by the state. He filed a motion in Effingham County’s circuit court following an initial dismissal of his case after the Illinois Supreme Court ruled against State Rep. Dan Caulkins (R-Macon). DeVore contends that his case was wrongly dismissed along with an accompanying temporary restraining order. According to Newschannel 20, he argues that his case is distinct from Caulkins’ because he possesses evidence challenging the state’s claim that certain law enforcement officers are exempt from this law.

Deering, previously a congressional candidate and currently serving as a Mount Zion school board member, announced her bid for Illinois’ 88th House District seat in June. She stated that while she hadn’t initially planned on pursuing politics, there is a demand for advocates of common sense conservatism and fearless leaders committed to representing voters’ values and interests in Springfield. According to Macon Reporter, she also noted that Central Illinois needs problem solvers with practical experience dedicated to fostering success for all.

Deering is hoping to succeed State Rep. Dan Caulkins, who has decided not to seek re-election. Her priorities include restoring parental rights in education and opposing curriculum agendas. The 88th House District, which Deering aims to represent, includes McLean, Macon, Piatt, and DeWitt counties as shown on the district map provided by Ballotpedia.
