HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital announced on April 1 that it will hold an open house for its new Center for Advanced Surgery, inviting community members to tour the facility and see its updated surgical suites and sterile processing department. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., taking place on the second floor of the hospital in the Surgery Family Lounge.

The hospital said this event offers a rare chance for visitors to view areas not typically accessible to the public, including operating rooms equipped with advanced technology designed to support patient care.

“This open house is an opportunity for our community to be part of our journey,” said Tim Layman, President and Chief Administrative Officer at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. “We are proud to invest in spaces and technology that enhance patient safety and elevate the care we provide, and it’s important to us that we share that progress with the people we serve. Inviting the public to go behind the scenes helps build understanding, trust and connection to the care happening here every day.”

During the event, attendees can join guided tours of new surgical suites, explore modern technology including robotics, view educational displays about future health care developments in Decatur, and meet members of the clinical team. The hospital stated that families are welcome at this free public event.

The four new surgical suites each measure 700 square feet and are located next to a sterile processing department as part of a $90 million renovation project at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. Other renovated spaces such as a renewed chapel and upgraded inpatient units are expected to open throughout 2026 as part of efforts positioning St. Mary’s as a key surgical destination in Decatur.
