Millikin University announced on April 30 that Jonathan Zapinski has joined the Big Blue men’s basketball program as an assistant coach. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Noonan said Zapinski brings a strong background in player development, evaluation, and relationship-building to the coaching staff.
The appointment is notable for the men’s basketball team as they look to strengthen their program with new talent and leadership. Zapinski is recognized for his attention to detail and energetic approach, which have contributed to his reputation as a rising talent in college basketball coaching.
Zapinski most recently worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Dallas from 2024 to 2026, where he gained experience in various aspects of collegiate basketball operations. He also worked at Sharks Academy in Elmwood Park and 3D Hoops Academy in Grapevine, focusing on player development and recruiting. In addition, he participated in the Jay Bilas Coaches Development Camp.
As a student-athlete at Elmhurst University, Zapinski was a five-time letter-winner and three-time team captain. He earned College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Year honors during the 2023–24 season. His achievements include being named a two-time CSC Academic All-American, Region 8 Player of the Year for 2023–24, and NABC Third-Team All-American. He leaves Elmhurst holding the record for most blocked shots in program history and played key roles on three CCIW Tournament championship teams.
Zapinski started in the NCAA Division III National Championship game in 2022 and received the Elite 90 Award at that year’s Final Four for having the highest GPA among championship participants. He earned bachelor’s degrees in actuarial science and finance from Elmhurst before completing his MBA at the University of Dallas.
The addition of Zapinski is expected to enhance Millikin’s coaching staff with fresh perspectives from both collegiate play and grassroots development.
