The Millikin Athletic Department announced on Mar. 19 the passing of former Big Blue Head Football Coach Carl Poelker, who led the team from 1982 to 1995 and remains the program’s all-time winningest coach.
Poelker’s impact on Millikin athletics is significant, with a record of 88-39-1 and two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships during his tenure as head coach. He also served as an assistant coach for 14 years before taking over the program, contributing as defensive coordinator and coaching wrestling and track and field. Poelker was a 1968 graduate of Millikin, earning All-District honors as a player, and was inducted into the Millikin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981.
Beyond his coaching record, Poelker is remembered for his influence on players and colleagues. The department said he made a profound impact on those who played for him or coached alongside him. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on May 2 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in conjunction with the Big Blue Spring Football Game.
After leaving Millikin in 1995, Poelker restarted the football program at McKendree University, leading it to seven conference championships and nine NAIA National Tournament appearances over 17 years. He became McKendree’s all-time leader in wins with 117 victories and was inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
Poelker remained connected to Millikin after retiring in 2012, attending events and supporting the football program. Current Head Coach Billy Riebock will host the Second Annual Carl Poelker Golf Outing on July 24 to honor him further. The weight room in Millikin’s Rathje Athletic Center is named after Poelker, reflecting his lasting legacy at the university.
Five members of Poelker’s family are also Millikin graduates, including his wife Peggy and their children Tim, Todd, Traci Eckenrod, and Trent.
