The Millikin Big Blue baseball team won against Elmhurst University, 18-5, in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup on April 19. The game, held in Wheaton, Illinois, ended after eight innings.
This win is important for the Big Blue as it improves their overall record to 25-8 and their conference record to 11-5. Strong offensive performances helped secure the victory.
Millikin began scoring early with Ty Cribbett’s single bringing home Leyton Ivers in the first inning. Sam Bushur followed with a single that scored Pete Britton, and Mick Niebrugge added a sacrifice fly for another run. Cribbett continued his strong performance throughout the game, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning and finishing with four hits and six runs batted in. Bushur contributed five hits out of six at-bats and also hit a solo home run.
Pitcher Caleb Akins earned the win by striking out six batters over five innings while allowing only three hits. Matthew Brummer pitched three innings of relief and struck out two more batters.
The teams traded runs throughout the middle innings before Millikin pulled away with big rallies late in the game. The eighth inning saw four more runs from Millikin on key hits by Ivers, Britton, and Carder Reich.
Looking ahead, Millikin will play North Central College on Tuesday, April 21.
