Decatur Memorial Hospital Nurse Honored with DAISY Award

42

Sara Hamilton received the DAISY Award for Nursing Excellence at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Known for her expertise and compassion, Hamilton, of Decatur, was nominated by a patient’s family member to receive the award, hospital officials said.

In the nomination form for her DAISY Award, the patient’s wife credited Hamilton with saving the patient’s life when the patient, who had been receiving chemotherapy but was at the hospital that day for an antibiotic infusion, arrived in the outpatient care center feeling sick. “Sara knew he was not himself, she noted his temp was high and in no time she was on the phone with his doctor. Sara took my husband in a wheelchair to the ER and she was literally running to get him there as fast as possible … he was septic. Had it not been for Sara’s quick action, I believe we would have lost him.”

A registered clinical nurse in the outpatient care center at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Hamilton has served as a nurse for more than 30 years, and has worked for 15 years at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Outside of work, Hamilton enjoys exercising with her beagle, Archie.

The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from complications of an autoimmune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses during his illness inspired them to create the DAISY Award.
