Today, December 26, 2023, marks the beginning of the annual celebration of Kwanzaa. This seven-day holiday, which runs through January 1, is observed by millions of people around the world. It is a time for reflection, community building, and honoring African culture and heritage.
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies, as a way to celebrate African-American identity and values. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to a different principle, known as the Nguzo Saba, which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
As families and communities come together to celebrate Kwanzaa, they engage in various rituals and traditions. One of the central elements of the holiday is the lighting of the Kinara, a seven-candle holder representing the principles of Kwanzaa. Each day, a new candle is lit, symbolizing the growth and progress of the community.
During this time of year, many people reflect on the importance of unity and the power of coming together as a community. As Dr. Maulana Karenga once said, "Kwanzaa is a celebration of unity, a time to reaffirm the bonds that connect us all." It is a time to honor and appreciate the contributions of African culture to the world.
Kwanzaa is not just a celebration for African-Americans, but for people of all backgrounds who embrace the principles of unity, self-determination, and collective responsibility. It is an opportunity to learn from and be inspired by the African values of community, creativity, and resilience.
As we enter this week-long celebration, let us remember the words of Dr. Maulana Karenga: "Kwanzaa is a time to remember and reaffirm the best of ourselves, our families, and our communities." It is a time to reflect on the past year, set intentions for the year ahead, and celebrate the richness of African culture.
From all of us, we wish you a joyful and meaningful Kwanzaa. As we join together in the spirit of unity and collective work, let us embrace the principles of Kwanzaa and strive for a better future for all. Happy Kwanzaa to all who celebrate!
