State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) announced that her bill, HB 2801, has been signed into law by the Governor. The legislation aims to expand opportunities for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) fields.

“As a marine biologist and science teacher, I want to encourage our youth to explore the industries of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, as we desperately need individuals in these core fields,” said Rep. Deering. “This legislation allows students to explore the many different career industries our great state has to offer and to be better prepared when leaving high school and entering the workforce or continuing their education. I am pleased that the Governor signed this bill into law and thank my colleagues for ensuring it was passed.”

The new law requires the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to create a public form on its website where organizations can submit STEAM-related opportunities such as internships and volunteer work. ISBE will develop a standardized submission form for organizations to use. After reviewing and approving submissions, ISBE will post approved opportunities online and share them with all school districts each year.

The law sets July 1st, 2026 as the deadline for ISBE to have the form created and posted online. Starting July 1st, 2027 and annually thereafter, ISBE must publish a report listing how many organizations submitted opportunities for high school students during the previous year by career area.

Deering was elected in 2025 as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 88th House District, succeeding Dan Caulkins.
