Arthur Public Library District issued the following announcement on Dec. 1.
Did you hear about the great bank robbery that took place in Arthur in 1898? In 1898 , six robbers broke into The National Bank at 201 S. Vine St. at night and held a witness hostage. They blew the door off the safe and made their escape with $2800.00 on a railway handcar to Arcola. They split into two groups, with three men going north and three going south in railroad box cars. In January 1900, Pinkerton Detectives arrested James Henry in Chicago as one of the robbers.
