Riders of the Decatur Public Transit System are required to wear face masks on buses in hopes of mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
City Manager Scot Wrighton told ICB Radio transit system officials have posted signs alerting riders of the change that masks are officially a requirement.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has also encouraged residents across the state to wear masks whenever they go out in public.
Pritzker officially enacted a stay at home order for the entire state back in late March that forced all businesses not deemed essential to shutter and imposed strict limits on the number of people who can publicly gather together. The ban has also resulted in the closure of all state facilities, parks and schools.
As of May 11, Illinois reported 79,007 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 3,459 deaths. Macon County has 146 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Pritzker said the latest data shows the state may finally be “bending the curve” in its fight against the virus.
"Our rate of rise is looking less and less exponential, that indicates to us that we are in fact bending the curve, there is even some evidence that we may be moving towards a flatter curve – but we need to keep watching the data on a daily basis," he said.
