The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another event in the Macon County Fair.
Macon County Fairgrounds has announced the county fair, scheduled for June 9-14, has been canceled because of the pandemic, WAND17 reported.
The fairgrounds attempted to get ahead of the curve and make the announcement a couple of months in advance. On its Facebook site, Fair Board President Gordon Moore said the board's vote was a difficult decision.
As of May 15, Illinois reported 90,369 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 4,058 deaths. Macon County has 159 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Fair officials also said it was necessary to follow state orders and CDC recommended guidelines at this time, and that they were looking forward to coming back bigger and better in 2021. The date for that fair has been set for June 8-13.
The board had been monitoring the situation since grounds were closed following the governor's executive stay at home order. On March 26, the board posted it was too soon to make a decision and it was hopeful the virus would be eradicated in time for the fair.
