Ameren Illinois plans to upgrade its natural gas transmission through modernized infrastructure in Macon County.

The transmission pipelines in the Decatur area would be the first installed in June, with pieces of a 4-mile segment placed, according to Now Decatur. The new pipes would replace steel ones from the 1930s.

Ameren Illinois plans to have the project completed by September, according to Now Decatur. Officials say the project will help strengthen the reliability of the company and support economic development.

“This upgrade is part of our overall statewide plan to enhance and improve our natural gas system,” Richard Mark, chairman and president of Ameren Illinois, said. “With these enhancements, Ameren Illinois is taking proactive steps to prepare for the future needs of our natural gas customers. We’re excited to bring these enhancements to our customers in Macon County.”
