Decatur police recently issued more than 20 speeding tickets in one day on North Water Street as part of a traffic-safety campaign.
Police reports show that on Jan. 21, officers wrote 23 speeding tickets to drivers who were exceeding the posted speed limit of 35 mph, the Herald & Review reported.
Authorities started the campaign to improve traffic safety in the North Water Street area.
“It’s one of those known spots where people drive way too fast,” Decatur Police Sgt. Timothy Maxwell told Herald & Review.
According to the reports, some drivers were clocked going speeds in excess of 50 mph in the area. Of the 23 drivers that received tickets, 16 were men, and seven were women. The youngest driver ticketed was an 18-year-old man, and the oldest was a woman aged 91.
The officers also issued tickets for other traffic offenses, including one 26-year-old woman who received two citations for not correctly securing children under the age of 8 in proper car seats.
A 2017 report from Herald & Review found that from 2013 to 2016, 52 crashes occurred at the corner of North Water Street and Pershing Road and 51 crashes were logged at the intersection with North Water Street and East Mound Road.
