A press conference was held to honor Champaign officer Chris Oberheim, who died in the line of duty.

Oberheim, a 13-year Champaign Police Department and also Decatur Police Department veteran, was shot along with another officer while answering a domestic disturbance. Although injured, the other officer is reported to be in stable condition.

"We lost a hero today" said Illinois State Representative Sue Scherer in a post to her Facebook account on May 19. "My deepest sympathies to the family of officer Oberheim and to all of those at the Champaign Police Department. My prayers are with the family and the community as we mourn this loss."

Oberheim was a native of Decatur and had a family with four daughters in the Monticello School district. He was 44.

The Illinois State Police said the ISP Division of Criminal Investigations was requested by Champaign police to investigate the shooting.
