Millikin University student Anne Longman, a senior arts technology major from Lake Forest, Ill., was recently honored by the American Camp Association (ACA) receiving the ACA J. Wendell and Ruth T. Howe Golden Lens Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in Photography. Longman accepted her award at the 2022 ACA National Conference held Feb. 8-11 in Portland, Ore.
Longman was recognized for her photo, titled "Zen and the Art of Horseback Riding," (left) that she took during her summer internship at Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction, Wis., which is an ACA accredited camp. Camp Manito-wish YMCA has been helping youth build character, embrace traditional values and cultivate leadership skills since 1919. The camp focuses on three major areas of emphasis: collaborative leadership, character and leadership, and wilderness tripping.
Longman is currently majoring in arts technology with an emphasis in visual media. A Presidential Scholar and a member of the Millikin Honors Program, Longman is also a member of the Women's track & field program.
Her creative work has garnered a number of arts technology awards from professional organizations over the past three years.
"I felt incredibly surprised and honored to receive this award," Longman said. "All summer I had been hoping to enter submissions to this contest, but never knew it would end up with a national honor. I had so much fun working at Camp Manito-wish, and wouldn't have been able to grow as a photographer without the overwhelming support of the staff."
The mission of the American Camp Association is to enrich the lives of children, youth and adults through the camp experience. The American Camp Association is a community of camp professionals who, for over 100 years, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. Because of its diverse 12,000-plus membership and its exceptional programs, children and adults have the opportunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character-building, skill development and healthy living.
Each year, the ACA Awards recognize individuals and programs for exemplary leadership in service and a passionate commitment to the value of the camp experience.
"Anne Longman has fully embraced the many Millikin opportunities to learn different creative media techniques through the Arts Technology major," said Jessa Wilcoxen, associate professor and chair of the Arts Technology and Administration Department at Millikin. "She often practices her live event photography and videography skills by capturing sports media on campus. This background helped her excel in her summer internship and produce media worthy of a national award."
