At the Sept. 27 meeting of the Decatur Public Schools #61 Board of Education, the board heard about a video project, a law enforcement program and a special anniversary for the football team.

Assistant Superintendent Jeff Dase told the board about a new video effort by the district. The video was created to bridge the home and school gap so parents can better understand and support their child’s education. The video shows several resources and explains how parents can support the district and their student in the wake of the pandemic and occasional at-home school sessions.

The principal of Baum Elementary, Mary Brady, shared a story about a recent event at the school. When an administrator came to visit wearing an FFA shirt, one of the kids asked if he was in the FBI. That started a chain reaction that ended in the local police and district administrators coming in to “deputize” the students into their own Federal Bureau of Instruction. They had stickers and T-shirts made for the event.

Maria Robertson, the director of community engagement in the district, wrapped up a list of district highlights by talking about a recent hall of fame celebration. The ‘72 Generals football team is one of only two undefeated teams in DPS history, and the current MacArthur team celebrated the 50th anniversary by wearing the baby blue uniforms, that the Generals wore when they played.
