The Millikin women's basketball team defeated Coe College 66-57 in the first round of the McWilliams Classic hosted by Washington University-St. Louis on November 18.
The first half was a tight contest with Millikin holding a 23-21 lead after the first quarter and went into the locker room at halftime 37-36. Millikin controlled the third quarter building an 11-point lead with 3:18 left in the quarter. Coe scored six straight to close out the quarter and it was a 55-50 Big Blue advantage.
Coe's Molly Buck hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter to pull the Kohawks to 55-53. Sarah Isaf answered for Millikin with a three-pointer of her own to make it 58-53. Chelsea McCullum and Sophie Darden would each have baskets to push the Millikin lead to 62-53 with 2:03 left in the game.
Millikin shot 25-75 (33 percent) from the field and made 8-17 (47 percent) from three-point range. The Big Blue went 4-6 from three-point range in the third quarter and made 1-2 in the fourth quarter from beyond the arc.
Coe shot 23-55 (42 percent) from the field making 6-22 (27 percent) from three-point range. Millikin won the rebounding battle 43-37 and forced Coe into 19 turnovers while committing only 10.
Isaf led Millikin with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists. Elyce Knudsen had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. McCullum and Darden each finished with eight points. Darden had a team high 11 rebounds. Abby Ratch had seven rebounds, three blocks and two points.
Kaalyn Petersen led Coe with 25 points with 20 points coming in the first half. Petersen had 15 rebounds.
Millikin improves to 3-2 while Coe falls to 3-1. The Big Blue will play Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday at 7 p.m.
