The Millikin women's basketball team opened play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) with a road victory at North Park University 59-39 in Chicago on November 30.
Millikin held North Park to 29 percent (16-55) shooting from the field and dominated the rebounding battle 52-39. North Park was 1-17 from three-point range. The Big Blue battled through its own shooting woes making 35 percent (21-60) and going 2-9 from three-point range.
Millikin had an early lead, but the Vikings battled back and lead 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. Millikin rallied in the second quarter outscoring the Vikings 15-6 to build a 29-22 advantage at halftime. Millikin shot 47 percent from the field in the third quarter making 8-17 shots to open up a 49-32 advantage after three quarters. The Big Blue's largest lead of the game was 20 points with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
Sophie Darden led Millikin with a double double with a career high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea McCullum had 13 points followed by Elyce Knudsen with 12. Abby Ratsch had nine rebounds, six points and three assists.
Ester Miller led North Park with 14 points.
Millikin is now 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in the CCIW. North Park falls to 3-4, 0-1.
The Big Blue play at Augustana on Dec. 3.
