Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) recently shared an news article on the newly passed assault weapons ban.

“At least 30 Illinois county sheriffs are refusing to enforce the newly-passed assault weapons ban because they contend it violates the Second Amendment,” he posted on his official website on Jan. 12

Halbrook shared a link to a news article on county sheriffs' refusal to enforce the assault weapons ban. According to Central Illinois Proud, the elected sheriffs of LaSalle, Fulton, Knox, and Woodford counties released statements about how they feel the ban is unconstitutional and that they would not enforce it. Their statements read: “The right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right. I, among many others, believe that HB 5471 is a clear violation of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Therefore… neither myself nor my office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the State, nor will we be arresting or housing law abiding individuals that have been solely arrested with non-compliance of this Act."

In addition to assault weapons, House Bill 5471 bans magazines with more than 10 rounds for long guns, and magazines with more than 15 rounds for handguns.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the amended version of the "Protect Illinois Community Act" on Jan. 10, according to ABC7. The bill went into effect immediately and bans assault weapons, high capacity magazines and rapid fire devices.
