Four Easy Ways to Stay Fit this Winter

Cold weather can prevent even seasoned exercisers from logging daily physical activity. This is the time of year when exercise serves as a physical and mental health boost so don’t give in to the temptation to take the season off.

“You can absolutely still enjoy exercise during cold weather,” said Linda Crews, PT, physical therapist with Memorial Care on Koke Mill. “But it is important to make safe decisions and pay attention to your body to prevent cold-weather injuries.”

Don’t let low temperatures prevent you from staying active. Here are some tips to help you stay fit this winter:

  • Bundle up and take walks. Walking or running in cold weather is safe, but you should take precautions to stay warm and dry. Avoid going outside if there is a wind chill warning. Dress in layers, avoid cotton and make sure your extremities are covered. Your Mom was right—wear a hat, earmuffs, gloves and appropriate socks. Most importantly, stay hydrated.
  • Change up your scenery. The neighborhood loop is fine for a while, but eventually you should mix it up. Look for outdoor venues like parks, bicycle paths or hiking trails to add variety, and don’t be afraid to tackle hills! Always stay aware of your surroundings from a safety perspective.
  • Move your workout indoors. No home gym? No problem. Squats, planks and sit-ups require zero equipment. Fire up an online video and try aerobic and muscle strengthening in your living room. If you have stairs in your home, they are a great way to add cardiovascular exercise.
Remember before beginning any type of fitness program, it’s important to speak with your primary care provider about the exercise regimen that’s best for you.
