Millikin Track Opens Outdoor Season

To kick off Millikin's outdoor track schedule, the Big Blue competed at Washington University in St. Louis on March 25.

The women's competition saw two school records fall, mightily impressive for many team members' first competition in over a month. Alyssa Ruiz broke the first record of the day in the women's 1500 Meters. Her time of 4:44.65 beat the previous record by half a record. Ruiz now holds both the indoor mile record and the outdoor metric mile.

Sophomore Elizabeth Hulick broke the school record in the 3000 Meters with a time of 10:56.15, a nearly 14 second improvement on the previous record.

In the women's 100 Meters, Itzel Garcia and Maria Lambert placed fourth and fifth respectively with times of 12.49 and 12.55. Lambert's time places her sixth all- time in Millikin history while Garcia approaches her collegiate beat time of 12.26. Garcia and Lambert also placed third and eighth in the women's 200 Meters. Alena Neal also ran a personal best time of 30.58 in the 200. Garcia was fourth in the Long Jump with a mark of 4.91 meters.

The women's 400 Meters saw two more personal records fall through Ashlyn Duncan and Maddie Maragni. Duncan was fourth with a time of 1:06:72 and Maragni ran a time of 1:12.19.

In an incredibly fast women's 800 Meters, Katie Risner and Faith Brindley placed ninth and 10th. Risner ran a time of 2:22.23, taking a massive step towards her previous form, while Brindley ran a collegiate PR of 2:26.55.

Occupying eighth all-time in Millikin history in the triple jump is jumps specialist Katie Janvrin. Her jump of 10.42 meters was good for third in the competition.

In the throwing events, many Millikin athletes got the opportunity to take their first attempts in the many collegiate throwing events not offered in high school competitions. In Javelin. McKenzie Boren and Hannah Swan opened their accounts with marks of 22.31 meters and 15.39 meters. In the Hammer, Brianna Sweas recorded a mark of 33.35 meters and Hannah Swan threw the implement 24.44 meters. Sweas also threw the discus 28.27 meters.

Moving over to the men's competition, three Big Blue athletes ran outdoor 3000 Meters races for the first time in school history. Bradyn Olmstead, Mark Jensen, and Derek Dayton hold the first three times with marks of 8:57.46, 9:38.01, and 10:06.66.

Senior Austin Bridgman won the men's 1500 Meters with a late charge in the last 150 meters of the race, finishing with a time of 3:58.66. Jake Shumaker also placed fourth in 4:02.29. Meanwhile, Christian Skaggs, Quartus Rassi, and Edwin Monroe all ran their first 1500 races ever and recorded times of 4:11.94, 4:20.36, and 4:22.99.

The men's 800 Meters saw two athletes agonizing close to breaking the benchmark time of two minutes flat. Brandon Mattsey and Reece Butcher recorded times of 2:00.55 and 2:00.75. Matt Gowen also ran a PR of 2:05.83.

Millikin also had an event winner in the 400 Meters with freshman Emmet Emmons running a time of 51.69. Right behind him in second was fellow Millikin athlete Awstace Grauer in a time of 52.74. And to continue flexing Millikin's prowess in the 400, Nick Molitor and Rye Johnson placed fourth and fifth.

The men's 200 saw a string of PRs light up the score board. Senior Caleb Bleich placed second overall in a time of 22.40, Colin Griffin was third in 22.46, Emmanuel Nwatu was fourth in 22.63, Kemper Koslofski ran 22.91, LaVareon Campbell in 24.03, Donovan Anderson in 24:42, Cany'e Gardner in 25.41. While all these 200 times are impressive, these gentlemen also ran PRs in the 100 Meters, with Jack Pearce also adding his hat to the ring. Needless to say, it was an exciting day to be a member of the Big Blue Sprints squad.

Both hurdle events saw new entries appear on the Millikin Top 10 list. Dayton Lasack won the 400 Meter Hurdles in 56.23, good for eighth all-time and ran a time of 15.91 in the 110 hurdles. Also, in the 110s, Nwatu ended up fourth all-time with a time of 15.00.
