Amid record inflation, Dr. Lisa Smith, a candidate for State House District 96, dismissed the White House’s message that prices were decreasing as Christmas approaches as a collection of “lies, lies, lies,” questioning the purported improvements in living conditions. Smith’s skepticism was fueled by a video featuring White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, which she shared.
“Lies , lies , lies. How many of you think we are better off this year? Give Me a break!” Smith said on Facebook.
Smith linked to a video, creatively edited with interspersed clips from the classic movie Elf starring Will Ferrell, which showcased Jean-Pierre proclaiming lower prices on everyday items.
“This holiday season, families are seeing lower prices on everyday items from gas to groceries,” Jean-Pierre stated.
Buddy the Elf’s famous line, “You sit on a throne of lies,” served as a pointed commentary in Smith’s post, highlighting the perceived discrepancy between the administration’s message and the reality experienced by consumers.
Jean-Pierre added a line on the price of common Christmas presents.
“Shelves are stocked and price prices for toys, TVs and used vehicles are all down from last year,” she said.
Smith drew attention to recent reports from the New York Post that underscored consumer challenges.
“No, you’re not imagining it — the price of just about everything in your life is getting more expensive,” the Post noted.
The Post revealed that, compared to October 2020, prices have surged by an alarming 18.2%, with basic food staples experiencing significant price hikes. A dozen grade-A eggs jumped by 47% to $2.07, and a pound of ground coffee beans increased from $4.52 to $6.18 since 2020. This upward trend extended beyond groceries, affecting housing costs with rent escalating over 20% in the past three years and monthly mortgage payments spiking by 42.9%. The automotive industry and fuel prices also witnessed notable increases.
Despite President Biden’s optimistic interpretation of the latest inflation numbers, economists are expressing uncertainty about a potential slowdown. They project that price increases may persist over the next six to 12 months.
Smith, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a Doctorate Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, is running for office with a focus on defending constitutional rights and fostering positive change. Her campaign highlights her commitment to family values, as evidenced by her 35-year marriage to a pastor, her role as a mother to ten children (seven adopted), and her family’s dedication to public service with three sons having served or currently serving in the military, according to her biography on her website.
House District 96 encompasses all or parts of Springfield, Decatur, Taylorville, Blue Mound, Mount Auburn, Niantic, Edinburg and Rochester. It is currently represented by State Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur).
