Mt Zion Community Unit School District 3 Board met Feb. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

President Jeffrey Sams called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Board members present were: Regan Deering, Michelle Shumaker, Jeffrey Sams, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, and Kristi Niles.

Administration present consisted of: Brian Rhoades, Associate Superintendent; Randy Thacker, Intermediate School Principal; Renea Smith, Special Education Administrator; Billy Rockey, Director of Technology; Justin Johnson, High School Principal; Julie Marquardt, Junior High Principal and Gary Gruen, Grade Principal.

The Pledge of Allegiance was cited by those present and led by Jase Sams and Ruby Stock, both from Mrs Schorfheide’s 3rd grade class and Rider Berry from Mrs Wendell’s 3rd grade class at Mt. Zion Grade School.

Regan Deering presented a motion to approve the Regular/Executive Meeting minutes of January 16, 2024. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call; Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, Regan Deering, Jeffrey Sams, and Kristi Niles. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments)

No Visitor Communications

Billy Rockey gave the annual curricular update: PSAT and SAT testing will be all digital this year. There was a new grant for touch screen chrome books for grades 2-6th. There is also a grant to put WIFI on the buses. Employee time cards will be moving to true time. Skyward is having an update this summer and the District website will be getting a fresh update this summer. Thanks to sponsorships, Braves TV is able to expand and is able to have multiple events broadcasted at the same time.

Dr Roundcount spoke of solar panels and questioned if the Board would like to pursue gathering more information on the topic.

Kristi Niles presented a motion to approve keeping Executive Session Minutes prior to February 2024 closed. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call; Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, Kristi Niles, and Jeffrey Sams, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments).

Kristi Niles presented a motion to authorize the destruction and disposal of the verbatim audio recordings from the closed session meetings of the Mt. Zion Board of Education prior to August 2022. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call; Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Kristi Niles, Jeffrey Sams, and Michelle Shumaker, yea. Kent Newton, No. Motion carried 5- 1. (see Book of Attachments).

Kristi Niles presented a motion to approve payment of the enclosed list of Fund Warrants, Quick Pays, and Athletic Imprest. Seconded: Kyle Janvrin Roll Call: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, Kristi Niles, and Regan Deering, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Kristi Niles presented a motion that the Financial Treasurer's Report be accepted and filed for audit. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, Kristi Niles, and Regan Deering, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Kyle Janvrin presented a motion to authorize the Administration to solicit paper and custodial supply bid quotations for the 2024-2025 school year according to the attached specification sheets. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kristi Niles, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, and Kent Newton, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion to authorize the administration to proceed with a contract leasing agreement with Midwest Transit Equipment for the leasing of twenty-four 2025 71-passenger school buses. Seconded: Kristi Niles. Roll Call; Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kristi Niles, yea. Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, and Jeffrey Sams, no. Motion defeated 3-3. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to dismiss to go into closed session at 7:39 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of a specific employee or office of the public body, security procedures, placement of individual students in special education programs and other matters relating to individual students and pending or probable litigation against, affecting, or on behalf of the public body. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call; Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, Kent Newton, Kristi Niles, Regan Deering, and Jeffrey Sams, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to return the meeting to order at 9:43 p.m. Seconded: Kristi Niles. Roll Call: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, Kristi Niles, Regan Deering, and Kent Newton, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion to approve the following personnel-related items as outlined below and including Educational Support Staff Personnel, Administrative one-year contracts and multi-year contract for Brian Rhoades, Associate Superintendent, 2024-29, pending a drug test and background check for new employees. Seconded: Kent Newton. Roll Call: Jeffrey Sams, Regan Deering, Kristi Niles, Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, and Kent Newton. Motion carried 6-0. (See book of Attachments.)

Dr Roundcount won the ABE Lincoln Award.

Regan spoke about the IASB spring talking points and asked questions about the conversations during the school board member visits to the schools.

Jeff Sams announced Tuesday, March 19, 2024, 6:30 p. m. as the next regular meeting of the Board of Education, to be held at the Mt. Zion C.U.S.D. #3 District Office, 1595 W. Main St., Mt. Zion, IL 62549.

Regan Deering introduced a motion to adjourn the Board of Education Meeting at 9:53 p.m. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Kent Newton, Regan Deering, Jeffrey Sams, Kristi Niles, Michelle Shumaker, and Kyle Janvrin, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)
