State Representative Amy Elik recently commented on the swift passing of a bill by Illinois Democrats that aims to alter election rules mid-cycle. "Earlier this month, Illinois Democrats rushed a bill through the General Assembly to change election rules mid-cycle," said Elik. The representative, who is set to compete against Democrat Nick Raftopolous in the general election, added that "Republicans are now suing to have the law found unconstitutional."

"Earlier this month, Illinois Democrats rushed a bill through the General Assembly to change election rules mid-cycle," said E Elik, according to Facebook. "This bill was introduced, passed through both chambers, and signed into law in under 48 hours, leaving no time for public review. Republicans are now suing to have the law found unconstitutional."

In a Facebook post, Elik shared an opinion piece from the Chicago Sun-Times. The piece read:
"It is hard to imagine how passage of this bill serves the interests of the citizens of Illinois. The League of Women Voters encourages practices that provide the broadest voter representation possible, are expressive of voter choices and encourage those with minority opinions to participate. The League believes in representative government, with elected legislatures that proportionally reflect the people they represent, and we support systems that inhibit political manipulation. Instituting unnecessary legislation that denies voters a choice, especially when it restricts ballot access for one of the two major political parties in Illinois, runs counter to these beliefs and is inconsistent with democratic principles in general."
The author of this piece was Becky Simon, president of the Illinois League of Women Voters.

As Elik stated, Republicans have initiated legal proceedings following the approval of Senate Bill 2412. Capitol News Illinois reported on May 17: "Four would-be GOP candidates are plaintiffs in the case, filed by the Liberty Justice Center—a libertarian organization known for its involvement in lawsuits challenging state law and politics—including one that ultimately resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down so-called 'fair share' union dues in 2018. According to the filing, 'at least a dozen people' were set to be appointed to the November ballot through the slating process."

Senate Bill 2412 began as an amendment to clarify certain aspects of the Children and Family Services Act but was later altered to amend the elections code. The revised bill "changes the filing dates of petitions for nomination for a State, congressional, or judicial office," among other provisions. The bill will take effect immediately upon signing and includes clauses for repealing the new acts on Jan. 1, 2025.

Elik has been serving the constituents of the 111th District since 2021, following her election victory in 2020. Her official biography reveals that she has held positions as a Foster Township Trustee, a board member for St. Mary’s Catholic School, and co-leader of the Fosterburg AG 4H club.
