State Representative Regan Deering of Decatur has expressed approval following the announcement of a 20-year power purchase agreement between Constellation Energy and Meta. This agreement involves Meta purchasing clean energy attributes from Constellation's Clinton plant, which is located in Illinois.

Rep. Deering stated, "Clinton has been a cornerstone of clean energy and good-paying jobs in central Illinois for decades. This partnership ensures that legacy continues – without burdening taxpayers. It’s the kind of forward-thinking investment we need more of in Illinois: one that supports families, boosts local economies and keeps reliable power on the grid."

The agreement will result in an expansion of Clinton's clean energy output by 30 megawatts through upgrades to the plant. Additionally, it will preserve 1,100 local jobs, generate $13.5 million annually in tax revenue, and contribute $1 million to local nonprofits over five years starting in 2026.

This contract allows Constellation to enhance its provision of new, clean energy within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s zone four territory, which includes central and southern Illinois. Meta's purchase aligns with its goal to match all its electricity usage with renewable sources.

As a result of this deal, the Clinton Clean Energy Center is assured operation for another two decades instead of facing closure.
