Decatur Public Schools (DPS) will continue with virtual learning through at least Nov. 13.
DPS initially moved to online learning after the March surge in COVID-19 cases prompted classes to be cancelled.
DPS Chief Communications Officer Denise Swarthout outlined the virtual learning timelines in a statement saying the decision has been made for the first half of the second quarter, but there is a possibility for a hybrid option for the remainder of the year. DPS plans to send out a form to garner families’ preferences for learning mode in the second half of the term.
Students’ reactions to the decision have been mixed. Grace Schaefer from Eisenhower High School told the Herald & Review most of them have adapted to online learning and think it’s safer, but others aren’t so positive. Jazmyn Schnetzler said the distractions at home make learning difficult.
Families will be updated on Oct. 30 about what to expect for the second half of the second quarter.
