Decatur FD responds to 322 fires in 2018

Decatur Fire Department responded to 992 calls in 2018 - 3.4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Decatur included 322 fires - 212 structure fires, 53 vehicle fires and 57 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $4,885,132 in fire loss - or about $15,171 per fire.

The department also received 667 false calls, including 17 malicious calls and 650 other false calls.

The calls resulted in 13 civilian fire-related injuries and three civilian fire-related deaths. Additionally, seven fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and 12 were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Decatur Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 108 active employees and 134 retired or inactive employees, was $1,032,079 positive as of December 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $3,099 for every fire in 2017.
