With "now hiring" signs dominating the marquees on businesses across Illinois, state leaders are examining whether the mass vacancy on jobs can be traced to unemployment benefits included in the American Rescue Plan.
State Rep. Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur) is among those who believe that businesses are struggling due to the extension of unemployment benefits.
"A new poll delivers a devastating blow to the latest lie from the mainstream media and Governor Pritzker about unemployment. According to a poll from Morning Consult, a whopping 1.8 million Americans turned down jobs because the government extended unemployment benefits and it discouraged work,” Caulkins posted on Facebook.
According to the Morning Consult, 26 governors opted to hastily axe federal benefits to unemployed workers.
Up to a third of unemployment insurance recipients nationwide said they turned down job offers during the pandemic, the news organization reported.
“The outlet stated that 14.1 million Americans who were receiving unemployment insurance for the week ending June 19 that ‘benefits reduced the number of accepted job offers by an estimated 1.84 million over the course of the pandemic,’” Caulkins said in his post.
The Morning Consult article stated that 45% of people turned down employment due in large part to receiving generous unemployment insurance benefits.
