Additionally, Sherer challenged individuals to seek opportunities in their own communities throughout the holiday season to do the same.
"On this #Givingtuesday2021 I would like to encourage all of my constituents to find a way to give back to your community this holiday season," Scherer stated on Facebook. "I very much enjoyed visiting each firehouse within the Decatur Fire Department, delivering a small token of my appreciation. Donuts of course! We also visited our local hospitals!"

Scherer was not alone in encouraging individuals to make charitable contributions in order to give back to their communities.
Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) also encouraged people to donate to the Boys & Girls Club, which provides programs that help children establish healthier lifestyles and educational success, according to a North Cook News report.
“Join in some holiday giving by donating to the Boys & Girls Club of America," Mussman stated on Facebook. "Many of our local families make great use of their Schaumburg location. It’s an incredible program giving support and camaraderie to so many kids.”
Batavia United Way also took part in Giving Tuesday by inviting locals and visitors to contribute to their Poinsettias for Senior Citizens program, which delivers a poinsettia, a cup of tea, and a Chick-fil-A meal card to a senior citizen in exchange for a $25 gift, according to a press release from the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.
"The continuing pandemic has been difficult and isolating to so many people, especially our elderly neighbors. Please consider donating to help show our love," the press release stated.
Scherer, a former teacher, is also an outspoken supporter for Illinois educators, having supported HB 655 earlier in July, which aims to make it simpler for prospective teachers to enter the field, according to a report by the South Central Reporter.
