Meridian Community Unit School District 15 Board met Feb. 22.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Meridian Community Unit School District No. 15 Board of Education held a regular meeting in the Board Room, Macon Campus. President Monte Hogan called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. The following Members were in attendance: Monte Hogan, Clint Gorden, Rebecca Kraft, Matt Roush and Adam Herbert. Member Morey was absent. Also in attendance were: Andy Pygott, Superintendent; Eric Hurelbrink, High School Princpial; Mindy McGuire, Middle School Principal; Lori Guebert, Elementary Principal; and Michelle Miller, Recording Secretary.

Meridian Elementary February Students of the Month:

Kindergarten- Ellis Luka, Jake Ewell, Hunter Anderson

1st Grade- Davis Chappell, Paisley Hamilton, Lukas Flack, Olivia Gillum

2nd Grade- Caleb Smithers, Ryleigh Mehrer, Charlie McMillin, Kyrstien Lynch 

3rd Grade- Jalena Campbell, Lauren Lester, Levi Henderson, Allison McPeak 

4th Grade- Blake Gurley, Karlie Sinnard, Remington LeVault

5th Grade- Corbin Neihart, Logan Lott, Milan Dean

High School Students of the Month:

Kolby Pagel, Kayden Mashburn, Tucker Parks, Madison Sapp, Kyndall Hamilton, Ysabella Zaragoza, Danaysha McMillen, Andrew Strisko, Matthew Henderson, Ty Lasco, Lexi Marion, Katelyn Bement, Jaden Starr, Ellie Fitzpatrick, Layla Lucas, Ian Sheumaker, Trinity Marquis, Lizzie Snow.

Administrative Reports:

Congratulations to the top 4 spellers from the district spelling bee

1st place- Alayna Bickel

2nd place- Ella Parks

3rd place- Grady Stock

4th place- Eleanor Moyer

Alayna Bickel and Ella Parks finished in the top 9 at the County Bee and advance to the Regional Bee to be held March 12.

FFA members conducted Ag in the classroom for elementary students during FFA Week. The elementary bookfair was successful earning $5600 worth of scholastic books and merchandise for the school.

Homework hangout has proven successful.

A Positive Behavior Challenge is underway at the middle school. Students who display positive traits are randomly selected daily and provided a treat from the office.

Thank you to all who made the 7th grade State 2A boys basketball tournament run smoothly. The District was awarded the Jumpstart K-1st Grade Grant for $53,576.

On a motion by Member Jones, seconded by Member Roush, the consent agenda was approved which consists of January minutes, February special meeting minutes, January financial reports and February disbursements as follows:

Education $104,948.21 

Building $23,882.97

Transport $18,939.37 

Tort $158.00

Life Safety $1,025.00 

TOTAL $148,953.55 (does not include payroll) 

Also included is the resignation of the following- Kelsey Pygott, Middle School Math, effective at the end of the 21-22 school year and Jennifer Schroeder as elementary lunch supervisor effective immediately. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6-0.

The budget analysis was presented.

Second reading of Board Policy 4:165.

The Single Audit, required due to federal grant proceeds, was presented.

President Hogan spoke to three companies in regards to the football scoreboard. The Board was presented quotes from two of those vendors. After discussion, it was the consensus of the Board to refurbish the existing scoreboard vs. purchasing a new one.

The Buildings and Transportation Committee met on February 10 to review proposed bids for the Middle School roof. There were two bids submitted. It is the recommendation of the committee to reject the bids. The committee will meet again in March to revisit this project.

Member Gorden, seconded by Member Kraft, motioned to approve the revisions and updates to Board Policy 4:165 as presented. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6-0.

On a motion by Member Jones, seconded by Member Gorden, the Board adopted the Resolution authorizing an Interfund Transfer as presented. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6- 0.

The Board rejected the bid proposals for the Middle School roof on a motion by Member Herbert, seconded by Member Gorden. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6-0.

Member Herbert, seconded by Member Jones, motioned to accept the quote from New Era Signs to refurbish the football scoreboard. Motion carried on a roll call vote 5-1. Member Roush voted nay.

On a motion by Member Gorden, seconded by Member Jones, the meeting adjourned to executive session at 7:32 p.m. for the purpose of discussing matters pertaining to the employment, appointment, or dismissal of specific employees or officers, purchase or sale of property, pending legal matters, student discipline and negotiations. Motion carried 6-0.

Member Roush, seconded by Member Gorden, motioned to return to open session at 8:16 p.m.

Brian Pekovitch was approved as MDL boys’ track coach for 21-22 season on a motion by Member Herbert, seconded by Member Gorden. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6-0.

Kathleen Jess was approved as MES lunch/recess supervisor on a motion by Member Roush, seconded by Member Kraft. Motion carried on a roll call vote 6-0.

The following volunteer coaches were approved for 21-22 on a motion by Member Jones, seconded by Member Roush: Carla Comerford, middle school drama;

Denna Williams, HS girls’ track; Gracie Butler and Maggie Comerford, HS girls’ softball; Dalton Collins, Denise Hunt, Seth Major and Matt Scales, MDL boys’ track. Motion carried with 6 ayes.

Member Jones, seconded by Member Roush, motioned to adjourn the meeting at 8:17 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be March 21, 2022, 6:30 p.m.
