In a June 1 news release, Sen. Doris Turner (D-Decatur) announced the creation of The Illinois America 250 Commission, a state panel to plan the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday.

"This is a tremendous occasion. Our great country has a deep and beautiful history to highlight," Turner said. "I am honored to play a role in this historic event."

House Bill 5015 was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on May 27. This bill creates the Illinois America 250 Commission "for the purpose of planning, promoting, and implementing appropriate commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States of America."

“This is a special time for the nation as we reflect on our history and accomplishments while also charting a course for the future,” Turner said. “Celebrations will ring from the coast of Maine to the glaciers of Alaska, and we want to make sure Illinois joins in those celebrations with a truly special program.”

According to a press release from The Illinois Senate Democrats, "The commission will work to highlight some important milestones and themes in our state’s history in relation to our nation’s history. Events like the founding of the State, the Lincoln Douglas debates, President Lincoln preserving the Union, and Manifest Destiny."
