The Boys & Girls Club of Decatur will host after-school programs that’ll offer homework help and cooking classes.
Representative Sue Scherer wrote on Facebook to share the program.
“Thank you Boys & Girls Club of Decatur,” she wrote.
The program costs $4 per month and starts on Aug. 22. It runs Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., for youths 7-17.
The Boys & Girls Club has a history of providing these programs. In Tallahassee, Fla., the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Bend has 1,200 individuals enrolled in its program.
“The Boys & Girls Club has helped me in many ways because it hasn’t always been easy with school work and stuff and they help me,” Laterricka Hodge, 14, said to WTXL.
This is just one of the programs that the Boys & Girls Club of Decatur offers. Other programs include Smart Moves, Money Matters, Career Launch, STEM, and Power Hour Homework Help.
The monthly fee varies between the clubs. WDRB reported a Boys & Girls Club has a $10 a month fee.
“We want to make sure we make some intentional investments in their humanity and their potential,” Angela Masden, a club director, said to WDRB. “Young people are our future and we're really looking for our after-school program.”
Scherer was first elected to the Illinois House in 2013. A Democrat, their legislative experience includes serving on the Elem Sec Ed: Adm., Lic. & Charter and Approp-Elementary & Secondary Educ. Scherer is a state representative who resides in Decatur, according to the Illinois House.
She is running against Republican candidate Lisa Smith in the upcoming November general election.
