A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Macon, Illinois on October 30, 2024. The request was made by us at the Macon Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request seeks detailed information about all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023, till the present date. Specifically, we asked for the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address of the property in question, and contractor's name.
In addition to this data set on new permits issued, we also requested information about all active residential and commercial building permits and their current status. The same fields as above were requested for these active permits.
As journalists dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such public records is essential for us. We believe that this information will contribute significantly towards our ongoing coverage of local government affairs in Macon.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public as a media organization, we have requested a fee waiver as per standard procedure under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.
