Mt Zion Community Unit School District 3 Board met May 5.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Jeffrey Sams called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m

Board members present were: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kent Newton, Regan Deering, and Kyle Janvrin

Administration present consisted of: Dr. Travis Roundcount, Superintendent; Brian Rhoades, Associate Superintendent; Justin Johnson, High School Principal; Julie Marquardt, Junior High Principal; Randy Thacker, Intermediate School Principal; Gary Gruen, Grade Principal; Heather Ethell, McGaughey Principal; Renea Smith, Special Education Administrator; and Billy Rockey, Curricular and Technology Director.

ADMINISTRATION PRESENT The Pledge of Allegiance was cited by those present and led by the following 3rd grade students: Vayda Marquis and Grayson Cox from Mrs. Schorfheide’s class, Mia Jump and Audrian Golz from Mrs. Wendell’s class, and Noah Fisher from Mr. Demeio’s class.

The County Clerk Offices have provided us with the voting results of the April 1, 2025 election. The following candidates have received the highest number of votes for the four-year terms of office: Michelle Shumaker, Kyle Janvrin, and Eric Law.

Board members present were: Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Kent Newton, Kyle Janvrin, Regan Deering, and Eric Law. 

The following Board Members were elected officers:

Jeffrey Sams- President

Kyle Janvrin- Vice President

Michelle Shumaker- Secretary

Roll Call: Kent Newton, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, and Jeffrey Sams, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion to approve the Regular/Executive meeting minutes of April 7, 2025. Seconded: Regan Deering. Roll Call; Jeffrey Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, and Kent Newton, yea. Eric Law Abstained. Motion carried 5-0. (See Book of Attachments)

Meagan Lock spoke about the softball program and concerns regarding coaching staff: Discrimination, harassment, injuries, favoritism, and why many girls have not returned to the program. 

Amy Ensighn spoke about the Kids Heart Challenge and gave Amelia Allen an award for raising $3,159.89

• Dr. Roundcount announced that the Zionoiz yearbook has been recognized among the best-of- the-best yearbooks in the country by Varsity Yearbook. 

• The following FFA members gave a review of this past years work and achievements: Drew Newton-President Kadence Miller- Historian Nick Scherer- Treasurer 

• Board members had and open discussion regarding homeschool participation policies.

Regan Deering presented a motion that the School Board meeting dates be held on the second Tuesday of each month, except as otherwise noted and/or notified. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, Kent Newton, and Jeff Sams, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to approve the final 2024-2025 calendar with the last half day of school on May 29, 2025.Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, and Michelle Shumaker, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michele Shumaker presented a motion to approve payment of the enclosed list of Fund Warrants, Quick Pays, and Athletic Imprest. Seconded: Kyle Janvrin. Roll Call: Michelle Shumaker, Eric Law, Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, and Regan Deering, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion that the attached Financial Treasurer’s Report be accepted and filed for audit. Seconded: Regan Deering. Roll Call: Eric Law, Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, and Kyle Janvrin, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to receive the following bid for Dairy Products and award the bid to Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. for FY 2026. Seconded: Michelle Shumaker. Roll Call: Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, and Eric Law, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to receive the following bids and award the fuel contract to Evergreen FS for the alternate locked-in rate as outlined on the following page for FY 2025. Seconded: Kyle Janvrin. Roll Call: Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, and Kent Newton. yea. Motion carried 4-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion receive the following bids for repairing and providing drainage to the bus lane at McGaughey based on the attached specs and bids and awarded the bid to Flannigan Contracting. Seconded: Kent Newton. Roll Call: Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, Kent Newton, and Jeff Sams, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Regan Deering presented a motion to dismiss to go into closed session at 7:36 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of a specific employee or office of the public body. Seconded: Eric Law. Roll Call: Kyle Janvrin, Eric Law, Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, and Regan Deering, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion to return the meeting to order at 10:23 p.m. Seconded: Kyle Janvrin. Roll Call: Eric Law, Kent Newton, Jeff Sams, Michelle Shumaker, Regan Deering, and Kyle Janvrin, yea. Motion carried 6-0. (See Book of Attachments.)

Michelle Shumaker presented a motion to approve the employment of certified and non-certified employees pending a drug test and background check for new employees. Seconded: Kyle Janvrin.
