October 8th, 2008 was the darkest day in the Blue Mound Fire Departments history. During a routine training at 8:24 PM, Firefighter William Miller applied the brakes to avoid a vehicle that pulled out ahead of him. The tanker he was operating went into a skid and rolled into the ditch and landed on its top trapping Billy and another firefighter. The other firefighter released his seat belt, climbed out and summonsed help. Approximately 5 minutes into the extrication Billy lost consciousness.
Billy was extricated from the tanker at approximately 8:36. CPR and advanced life support was administered and he was air lifted to the hospital. Billy was pronounced dead at 9:38 PM. There was no evidence of lethal trauma caused by the accident. The physical stress of crashing the tanker triggered a heart attack or cardiac arrhythmia resulting in his sudden cardiac death. Billy was only 24 years old.
